“Dae Jang-geum or Tae Chang-gǔm; literally The Great Jang Geum, aired in the United States as A Jewel in the Palace” is a 2003 TV series produced by South Korean TV channel MBC. Loosely based on the historical figure depicted in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, the show focuses on Jang-geum, the first female royal physician of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. 미국에서는 A jewel in the Palace라는 이름으로 방영되었던 대장금은, 2003년에 남한 티브이 채널 MBC가 산출해낸 드라마입니다. 조선 시대의 역사적 사실에 입각하여 표현된어, 처음으로 한국 조선시대 역사상 최초로 어의녀가 된 주인공 장금을 중심으로 진행됩니다. 이야기의 주제는 그녀의 불굴의 노력, 수랏간 음식과 전통 의술을 포함한 한국 전통 문화의 묘사입니다.

It was BCCS153: Computer Architecture class. I got bored so I glanced at Ali’s monitor to see what he’s doing. It looked like a website about TV dramas so I asked about it. There were Korean ones, too. Dae Jang Geum, too. He said he’s been watching it lately and he likes it.
학교 컴퓨터 건축시간에 너무 심심해져버려서 친구가 뭐하는지 보았는데, 글쎄 얘가 공부는 안하고 TV 드라마 관련 웹사이트를 보고 있는 것이었어요. 그래서 물어보니, 게중엔 한국 것들도 있었고, 대장금도 있었어요. 요새 대장금을 보고 있었는데 재밌답니다.

When I was in Korea, I wasn’t really interested in TV series then I got it from my chinese friend here in New Zealand and watched it with my little brother and sister. Now it’s become one of my favorite dramas in all time. However, my little sister seemed not to understand some of words in Dae Jang Geum. I guess it’s because of the ancient Korean they are speaking, which is very different to the Korean spoken today. The meaning of some words remained a mystery even to Koreans, Me. Kidding. Haha. Alright, I’ll briefly introduce about Dae Jang Geum.
제가 한국에 있을 때는 TV 프로그램에 그다지 관심이 없었는데, 여기 뉴질랜드 와서 살면서 중국 친구에게 받아 보게되었어요. 남동생, 여동생과 함께 봤는데, 이제는 이게 제가 제일 좋아하는 드라마가 되었습니다. 여동생은 뭐, 어떤 말들을 못알아듣기도 하는 눈치였고요. 그게 아마도 극중 대화들이 주로, 현대어와는 사뭇 다른 고대 한국어로 이루어져있다보니 그런건 같네요. 몇몇 단어들의 뜻이 사실 일반 한국인들에게도, 저에게도 또한 좀 신비하게 느껴질 정도니깐요. 하하, 장난. 음, 그럼 간단하게 또 대장금에 대해 소개를 해나갈게요.

Its a show that could be shown on the Soap Opera Channel, History Channel, Food Channel, and Medical Channel at the same time! This is based on a REAL character in Korean History. 그 인생에 풍파가 많지만, 도망자 신세인 아버지를 둔 아이에서부터 수랏간의 나인, 상궁으로, 최초의 어의녀로 자라나는 서장금의 이야기. 드라마 채널에서도, 역사 채널에서도, 음식 채널에서도, 의술채널에서도 동시에 보여질 수 있을 정도로 괜찮은 볼거리. 한국사에 실존했던 인물을 주제로 만들어진 이야기.

In search of articles about this TV drama, I went to IMDB first and found this above. Whoever that is, the article he wrote there pretty much sums it up so I brought it over. Haha.
이 드라마에 관련된 글들을 찾으려고 먼저 IMDB에 갔는데 위의 글을 발견했어요. 누가 썼는진 몰라도, 대장금을 잘 나타내주는 것 같아서 가져왔어요.

Well, firstly, I guess the soundtrack is the biggest reason quite many people still remember this Korean drama by. Some say that the fusion of Korean and Westen music produces a uniquely mystical sound, without alienating those who may not enjoy traditional Korean music. Not that I fully, 100% understand what he’s saying exactly but I agree with him.
음, 첫째로, 참 많은 사람이 이 한국 드라마를 기억하는 가장 큰 이유로 그 음악을 꼽고 싶어요. 어떤 이들은 이 한국과 서양 음악의 융합이, 한국음악을 잘 즐기지 못할 사람들을 소외시키지 않으면서도, 독특한, 불가사의의 소리를 만들어낸다고 합니다. 뭐, 제가 전부 이해하고 하는 소리는 아니지만, 그래도 동의!

And secondly & finally, okay, I think it’s getting too many so let’s jump right up to the cast. (=Pictures, lol) Its background is very, very old and you might not like it but I’ll try to upload as many pictures as I think is alright. lol
두번째, 그리고 마지막으로, (이런 글이 쓰다보면 금방 지쳐요..) 너무 길어지는 것 같기도 하니, 바로 배역 (그냥 사진들)으로 넘어가기로 하지요. 하하. 이 이야기의 배경이 너무 오래되었다보니 별로 안좋아하실 수도 있겠지만 그래도 괜찮다고 생각되는 한 많은 사진을 올리도록 해볼께요.
